- Squamous cell carcinoma of the mouth occurs more commonly in
- persons who smoke or chew tobacco, especially if they are also
- heavy drinkers (Wynder and Hoffmann, 1967, Bross and Coombs,
- 1976, Winn et al., 1981). However this does not explain all of
- the epidemiological features of the disease since some 15% of
- patients are non-smokers who have never smoked, the incidence of
- the disease has not increased in parallel with other smoking-
- associated diseases (Smith, 1979), and there is no increased risk
- for heavy drinkers who do not smoke (Wynder and Stellman, 1977,
- Bross and Coombs 1976, Winn et al. 1981). The normal flora might
- represent another contributing factor in oral carcinogenesis.
- Leukoplakia which contains the fungus Candida albicans has a
- greater rate of malignant transformation than other leukoplakias
- (Cawson and Binnie 1980), and oral bacteria synthesize
- nitrosamines when secondary amines are added to saliva
- (Tannenbaum et al. 1978). The herpes simplex virus has been
- associated with oral cancer (Shillitoe et al. 1983a, Eglin et al.
- 1983b) and is recognized as being an oncogenic virus (Tooze,
- 1980). Interactions between herpes viruses and papillomaviruses
- have also been suggested (zur Hausen and Gissmann, 1980).
